Taking the Leap

The other day at Barton Springs swimming pool a little boy stood at the edge of the diving board.  Right at first, the small crowd at that end of the pool was urging him to jump! But little by little, like a ripple, heads farther and farther down the pool, and all along the sidelines, turned toward the little boy.  Pretty soon, all eyes of the ENTIRE Friday afternoon crowd were on this kid. Jump!!  Applause, cheers, JUMP! 15 minutes went by.  The whole pool waited.

He didn’t jump. What I hope is, when he looks back on being carried off the board by his dad, he remembers – not so much that he failed to jump - but the quiet anticipation from the throngs, his mom and dad each taking a turn to walk out to encourage him, the lifeguards who didn’t blow their whistles and tell him to hurry up, the long line of other people waiting to jump, waiting.

We all got it – you know what I’m saying?
